Dear Jim and Jonathan,
I clearly remember Richard Holmes briefly interviewing (in the yard of her
home) the present Belgian occupier of one of the 'Plugstreet' buildings in
which Churchill briefly sojourned. She knew nothing about the one-time
famous resident of the house.
This was in a BBC series entitled 'In the Footsteps of Churchill'. No doubt
a number of List Members have a video tape of the episode.
He later derived a book from the series :
Holmes, Richard. In the Footsteps of Churchill. London : BBC Books, 2005.
No doubt Richard Holmes could provide full indications to find the place
again, and I suppose that he can be contacted through his publishers.
Best,
A.C.

Jonathan Hayes,
I am also planning a trip to 'Plugstreet', but this will not be until the
end of May.
There is a useful map of the Ploegsteert sector in vol III of the Official
Biography, page 649. The location of Laurence Farm is about 2,000 yards,
just over a mile, due east of Ploegsteert village.
Am sure you will find someone in the village who will be able to give you
the exact location.
As and when you find Laurence Farm (for a note on the spelling see Martin
Gilbert's footnote on page 652) I would be most grateful if you could send
me an email.
Advance thanks.

I'll be making a trip to the WW1 battlefields - Ypres and the Somme - in a
couple of weeks, and, of course, one of the places I'd like to see is
Lawrence Farm, Churchill's HQ. Only where, exactly, is it? None of the
Churchillian histories are any help; Major and Mrs. Holt say nothing about
it (WSC doesn't even get a listing in their Prominent People in the
Salient - though Anthony Eden gets a mention!).
Rose Coombs at least can get me in the general area: "Continuing westward
toward Ploegsteert village, along the southern flank of the wood, to the
left, amid the fields, clusters of farm buildings can be seen. One of these
is Lawrence Farm....."
I can get that far without much problem, but which among the "clusters of
farm buildings"? I fully realize these are private property and, of course,
would fully respect that. No true Churchillian would do otherwise. But it
would be nice to be able to look toward a specific building and be able to
say "That's Lawrence Farm."
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
