Some of history's truths that aren't facts are just too easy or fun to
believe so they're never given up. They're still talking about the "corrupt
bargain" between John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay almost two hundred years
later despite the lack of any proof whatsoever that there was a quid pro quo
for Clay's support. Clay hated Andrew Jackson and for his part, Jackson said
on his death bed that his one regret was "not shooting Henry Clay." So Clay
would never have supported Jackson in the disputed election of 1824 no
matter what. Then John Quincy Adams needed a Secretary of State so he did
something so rare: Appointed the best qualified man regardless of how the
politics looked.
