I have heard the statement before, attributed to Churchill. Not sure about
where and when he is reputed to have said it.

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Gunmakers Pub/Churchill quote inquiry
From: [email protected]
To: [email protected]

I sought the help of a friend who's an official at the Marylebone Library in
Marylebone Road, asking if she was familiar with the pub, and she replies:

No, but as it happens I may well be meeting a friend for lunch over that way on
Friday. If so, I can drop in - food appears to be good. I have to admit, I
can't trace the Leader or the Letter in the Times in May 1945, so suspect
"prepared" means wrote, got a private reply and did not publish.
http://www.winstonchurchill.org/learn/speeches/quotations/famous-quotations-and-stories
seems to give the source as H.A.Grunwald, Churchill: The Life Triumphant
(American Heritage, 1965). If so, that may give the specific source.

During a recent visit to London I had lunch in a pub called The Gunmakers just
behind Marylebone High St. The pub contained to my surprise and delight a
number of WSC items , all well known . However one item caught my eye. It was a
large framed print of WSC with the following inscription underneath. Can anyone
tell me whether or not it is authentic?
It reads “ At the end of the war, before the election he lost in 1945 The Times
of London prepared an editorial suggesting that he campaign as a nonpartisan
world leader and retire gracefully rather soon afterward. The Editor first
informed Churchill that he was going to make these two points. “Mr Editor,
Churchill said to the first point “I fight my corner” and to the second “Mr
Editor I leave when the pub closes”
If not genuine then it certainly has a Churchillian ring to it!
Has anyone come across it before?
Regards

(which looks an authoritative site) seems to give the source as H.A.Grunwald,
