Dear Dave, There is not the slightest whiff of retro-snobbery. I would love to see Roger Daltrey in concert and happen to be a big fan of The Who, The Rolling Stones (I tried to get tickets to their recent Hyde Park concert), The Kinks, Otis Redding, James Brown, Elvis and Roy Orbison (to name a few) as well as far more modern singers from my own generation. I'm also an even bigger fan of Ellington, Miles Davis, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Dinah Washington and Lady Day as well as a lover of Chopin, Elgar, Bach and Handel...and indeed Byrd, Tallis and Palestrina. I have extremely broad tastes. This is not about music snobbery but simply about differing views of what/when is the appropriate "time and place" for popular music. I don't mind admitting I'm a big fan of Elton John, but his performance at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, whilst overwhelmingly popular with much of the UK population, struck many old schoolers and traditionalists as, at best, odd -- the funeral continues to be commented on by historians as an event the signalled the end of emotionally reserved "stiff upper lip" Britain (whatever one's view of that may have been) and the dawning of a new era. But, as I said in my last email, things are done differently in different places and different countries -- and times also change. At any rate, I have dealt with this in my last email and so there is not really anything more than needs to be said.
