Hi Jonathan

Not quite, but nearly.

I used to live in Winchester for some years and this was indeed one of those
local stories.

The natural amphitheatre is called Cheesefoot Head, it's a couple of miles
outside Winchester. It is on the other side of the road and a little further
away from Ovington, where there is a massive amphitheatre-like depression that
you could be confused by - that one is more like a glacial path.

Eisenhower addressed troops at Cheesefoot, I think:

I think I have read that confirmed somewhere, but don't quote me as I may be
just remembering local lore.

But I don't think WSC was there.

However, they were in the same part of the country together quite a lot. I
think they met some troops together in Winchester itself possibly on the same
trip.

My favourite story is the one about Droxford Railway station, nearby and
possible en route. This photo was taken there:

The train had to move to the nearby tunnel due to an air raid, I think.

Anyway, the station is disused, but still there, track and all buildings, but
has been converted into a beautiful private house. It came up for sale whilst I
was living there, and I had designs on it, sadly unfulfilled!

Robert
