Thank you for sending this piece of history. I thoroughly enjoyed WSC’s
reaction and speech and agreed with his assessment of the portrait. Why the
artist chose such a pose (and so poorly executed) for a portrait a man as
dynamic as WSC is way beyond me!

How in the world did Miss Hamblin manage to keep this secret?? I am glad
there weren't any paparazzi photographers around at Chartwell, when the
painting was taken out in the dead of night. What a courageous thing for her
to do.

The Sutherland portrait was really horrific. WSC had a great comeback line
about it. But I can certainly see why Clementine hated the thing.

The Daily Telegraph recently had an interesting article on the destruction of
the infamous Graham Sutherland portrait of Winston Churchill in which Sonia
Purnell reveals the painting was burned by Grace Hamblin at the wish of
Clementine Churchill. The article is available at:

I have an entry on the destruction of the painting on my Churchill blog along
with a newsreel video from 1954 of the unveiling of the painting and
Churchill’s remarks. The blog is at:
