Yes the smiling Churchill is a nice contrast to the “angry” one.

Actually Karsh took seven photos in all at the time – with the assistance of
Library and Archives Canada staff they were uncovered in 2011 and published in
my book Winston Churchill and Mackenzie King, So Similar So Different.

All seven were shown on the cover of Finest Hour # 154, Spring 2012, Churchill
and Canada 1900 – 1955 issue.

Subject: [ChurchillChat] FW: Yousuf Karsh's portrait of a smiling Winston
Churchill

You might like to see the portrait taken by Karsh after the more angry one that
is so famous. This captures the twinkle in his eye and the impish humour on
which I report in my forthcoming book, Working with Winston.

Dear Irwin,

I am delighted to present this alternative portrait by Yousuf Karsh of the
enigmatic Winston Churchill, taken upon Churchill's trip to North America in
1941. The photograph was taken at the same sitting as Karsh's now infamous
portrait of a disgruntled Churchill, which has become the most recognisable
image of the politician.

Karsh was invited to photograph Churchill by the Canadian Prime Minister,
MacKenzie King, following his speech in the Canadian House of Commons. Karsh
was waiting, with his equipment prepared, for Churchill as he entered the
Speaker's Chamber, however, the politician had not been warned of sitting and,
becoming irritated, lit one of his trademark cigars. Karsh waited patiently
until Churchill relented and agreed to have his photograph taken. He would not
however put down his cigar, so the young Karsh audaciously stepped forward and
pulled it from Churchill's mouth. This action produced one of the most
important portraits of the twentieth century, as a stoic Churchill stares back
at the camera.

Impressed by Karsh's boldness, Churchill allowed him to take a second portrait,
depicting a more relaxed Churchill with the same characterful expression and
dramatic lighting that Karsh is celebrated for. We are the sole representative
of the Yousuf Karsh Archive in the UK and we have recently received information
that there are just five prints remaining. We have two prints available, with a
further three to be released by the archive with pricing to follow.
