Can you imagine any administration who seems to want to keep our country down?
and I read not very long ago. that the EPA Science Web was removed by the
administrations order (The government report, that is).

           Dear Theresa J.,

In March, we learned that federal climate scientists were told that they can’t
talk about global warming and polar bears. A few weeks later, we received
confirmation that a Department of Interior official rewrote the work of
scientists who were attempting to save endangered species. And just this month,
a federal judge found that scientists’ views were suppressed to allow more
logging in the Pacific Northwest.
But as troubling as these examples of political interference in science are,
they fly under the radar screen of many Americans. To prevent these abuses of
power, we need to help all Americans understand that the misuse of science
negatively impacts their health, safety, and environment.
  That’s where you come in.

Science Idol: the Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest
Three of America’s leading cartoonists—Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau,
Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles, and Speed Bump artist Dave Coverly—have
teamed up with UCS in Science Idol: the Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon
Contest. Together, we’re seeking creative, original, and compelling editorial
cartoons that lampoon the misuse of science while communicating the dangerous
effects of this political interference.
These celebrity artists know that cartoons can make complex issues accessible
to mass audiences. The winner of last year’s contest, James McLeod, rounds out
the judging panel. Together, they’ll work with UCS to narrow down the entries
to just 12 finalists. But you don’t have much time. The entry deadline is May
22—just a few short weeks away.
The grand prize winner—selected by the public in June—will receive $500 and
an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to have lunch with the Washington
Post’s Toles! And all 12 finalists will be featured in the 2008 Scientific
Integrity calendar, designed to keep this issue on the minds of thousands of
Americans all year long.

Making Progress
While the Bush administration’s interference in science continues, Congress
is turning up the heat. In recent weeks, UCS has testified before the House and
Senate about political interference in science. Together, we’ve helped pass
strong whistleblower protections for scientists through the House.
Help us keep this momentum going. Defending science from political
interference won’t be a top priority issue for Congress until we make it so.
Enter Science Idol and tell others about this contest today.

Your cartoon could be the one that helps UCS keep political interference in
science in the public spotlight—where it should be. And you don’t have to go
far for inspiration.
I look forward to seeing your creative and witty submissions. Remember, the
contest deadline is just a few weeks away!
  Sincerely,

  Michael Halpern

chance to enter this contest and win a trip to Washington, D.C.? Tell them
about this contest or send them an e-card featuring any of last year’s
cartoons.
