Hi all,

We are currently evaluating Solaris/Opensolaris with ZFS/CIFS as an option to
replace our Windows based shared storage in a university department. I am
having some difficulty with the Active Directory integration (actually, just
joining the domain is currently where I'm stuck). I will preface this post by
saying that I am a bonafied newb in Solaris but I am certainly trainable. Any
help would be appreciated.

When I attempt to join the domain I get the following:

# smbadm join -u ali uwhis.hosp.wisc.edu
This operation requires that the service be restarted.
Would you like to continue? [no]: yes
Enter domain password:
Joining 'uwhis.hosp.wisc.edu' ... this may take a minute ...
failed to join domain 'uwhis.hosp.wisc.edu' (UNSUCCESSFUL)
#

Here is what I get when trying to connect with Kerberos:

# kclient -a ali -T ms_ad

Starting client setup

---------------------------------------------------

Setting up /etc/krb5/krb5.conf.

Attempting to join 'PACS-SOLARIS' to the 'UWHIS.HOSP.WISC.EDU' domain.

Password for [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Forest name found: uwhis.hosp.wisc.edu

Site name not found. Local DCs/GCs will not be discovered.

Creating the machine account in AD via LDAP.

Failed to create the AD object via LDAP.
---------------------------------------------------
Setup FAILED.

This leads me to think that the problem is with LDAP. Here is the output from
"ldapclient" when trying to get it configured:

# ldapclient -v init 10.101.1.50
Arguments parsed:
        defaultServerList: 10.101.1.50
Handling init option
About to configure machine by downloading a profile
No profile specified. Using "default"
Can not find the nisDomainObject for domain
#

Questions: 1) Why does LDAP need an nisDomainObject when we are not running
NIS? 2) Do I have to add the nisDomainObject to the AD before I can get the
LDAP client running? If so, where specifically does this need to be added?

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
