I tried the above lookup from yet another OpenSolaris machine on my local network. It works! It claims it got a response from ROSALIND itself. So then I went back to the original machine, disconnected punchin, and tried it. It works! nissan# smbutil lookup ROSALIND Got response from 192.168.0.100 IP address of ROSALIND: 192.168.0.100 Apparently: 1. The lookup is case sensitive. 2. The lookup is normally answered by the machine itself, not nmbd. 3. Running punchin breaks local network broadcast. I guess I'm off to talk to the punchin guys for #3...
