I added the line to auto_master as I have no auto_direct file and adding it has 
no effect. I'm running OpenSolaris 2008.11 . I'll try SXCE and see if it works.

Also, is this the recommended way to set it up so that the share is always 
active without users having to mount it themselves? I read the Solaris CIFS 
admin guide and it doesn't mention any other way to do it. Adding a line to 
/etc/vfstab causes an SMF error on boot which stops other services from 
starting.
