OK, that might help someone else. I finally figured out what was the cause of the problem.
When I upgraded to 106, xntpd would not sync the time with my sources anymore. So I found a work around in http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6799655 that was actually working at fixing xntpd. But at the same time it appears that this change in /etc/sock2path file was also breaking smbd. I figured it out today after upgrading to 109. I could not connect anymore to my server via ssh after the reboot. This workaround was also breaking at least ssh and telnet. Reverting back to the original sock2path file made everything work normal again (except xntpd which should be fixed in 110).
