smbsrv is the kernel component of Solaris CIFS server.
I'm not exactly sure what's wrong here, if you can try
rebooting your system to see if it resolves the issue.

hi afshin and thanks for your response.
after following the opensolaris cifs tutorial from that link
# rem_drv smbsrv
Driver (smbsrv) not installed.
# pkg install SUNWsmbskr

# pkg install SUNWsmbs
No updates available for this image.
# add_drv smbsrv
Driver (smbsrv) is already installed.
# svccfg import /var/svc/manifest/network/smb/server.xml
Looks like that went well. now ill try to join a workgroup.
# svcadm enable -r smb/server
svcadm: svc:/milestone/network depends on svc:/network/physical, which has
multiple instances.
# gedit /etc/pam.conf
(added "other password required pam_smb_passwd.so.1 nowarn")
#passwd soandso
New Password:
Re-enter new Password:
passwd: password successfully changed for soandso
Looks like that also went well. now let me run cifs-chkcfg
# ./cifs-chkcfg
CIFS driver (smbsrv) is not loaded
try: modload -p smbsrv
can't load module: No such file or directory
so im still stuck with finding this "smbsrv" driver or module (whatever it is
or does exactly.) is this a common problem?
