This sounds like a known problem with Excel files saved on NAS storage. I've 
also experienced it using a Samba server. Check out Microsoft KB article 324491 
to see if the suggested registry edit on the client helps with Solaris CIFS 
Server too: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324491.
