Ah, yes, sorry about that. I was wrapping my head around both forums yesterday,
looking for answers, and must have mis-clicked. ;(

Nevertheless, some tunables did help our case - limiting the size of 
outstanding 
cached writes to ZFS in particular (zfs_write_limit_override). If a large 
stream 
comes into the server (as opposed to a small burst of data), OpenSolaris begins 
to flush the cache in a more even IO pattern now as quickly as it's filled, not 
in 
some scheduled once-every-X-seconds manner.
