Thanks for all the help. In the end, it turned out to be a combination of my
misreading the permissions and needing to recursively set ACLs. Interestingly,
while I can read/write the files with --- permissions properly across CIFS and
NFS, local users fail (the older UNIX permissions dominate, and the ACLs seem
to be ignored). Since this is simply a file server, it is not a real problem,
and I'll try to figure that one out. The help here has solved my problem.
