nss_ad can be used to resolve user and group names using AD, in the same way that would use NIS or local files. If you add 'ad' to nsswitch.conf, and you have created files from Windows clients, you will see the user and group names as they appear in AD rather than the names from NIS or ephemeral IDs. nss_ad has nothing to do with joining a domain.
