Samba is a user-level service and takes some performance hits because of it. I
had one client doing a time-machine backup that took over 5 hours and Samba
took 50% of the cpu. I switched to the native CIFS service and it took under 2
hours and less than 1% of the cpu. Dtrace showed that samba was doing a heck
of a lot of random disk access operations (about 10k per second) which seemed
to be the root of the slowdown.
