You'll need to start the CIFS Service (smb/server) to get name announcements.
I loaded OpenSolaris from the live CD and I am surprised it is not configured to connect to Windows shares by default.
You're preaching to the choir here. Feel free to take that up with the people who manage the OpenSolaris distribution. That decision was against the advice from various people here but we're not involved in what is or is not included in the default OpenSolaris distribution or installation.
