I have since discovered that Solaris CIFS won't accept a password from a
command window in Windows Server 2008.

But I got it working. Windows Server 2008 (and Windows Vista and presumably
Windows 7) is configured to send NTLMv2 responses only. While it does that in
the GUI on the first try, on the second, it seems to be bending the rules and
sends a v1 response instead.

I changed the Local Security Policy to send only NTLM (v1) responses, and it
now accepts the password on the first try in the GUI and also on the command
line.

Solaris CIFS is configured lmauth_level=4, so this looks like this is a bug in
Solaris Express 11.
