Supreme Audit Agency: Not Possible to Audit Soeharto's Wealth

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) stressed that it
cannot audit former president Soeharto's wealth before the legal personnel
request it.

BPK Deputy Chairman, Abdullah Zaini, said that Soeharto's alleged corruption
case disclosure has now entered legal domain. So the one that holds the control
over the case is legal personnel. "When there's a request, BPK will then
examine it," he said in Jakarta yesterday (14/1).

Earlier, a number of legal practitioners urged BPK to audit Soeharto's wealth.
A member of the Presidential Advisory Board, Adnan Buyung Nasution, for
instance, asked the government to appoint an independent auditor to calculate
the value of the 32-years ruling former president's wealth. The measure is
necessary should the government and Soeharto's family agree to solve the legal
case outside of court.

If the two parties agree with the compensation offered, said Buyung, the peace
solution as offered by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono through Attorney
General Hendarman Supandji last Saturday (12/1), can be concluded in the civil
case. "After calculating, the agreement can be discussed," he said.

Now the Attorney General's Office (AGO) as the state prosecutor charged
Soeharto and Supersemar Foundation Rp11.5 trillion. The charge is being
processed in the South Jakarta District Court.

In response to the peace effort, Professor Indrianto Senoadji, Soeharto's
lawyer, said earlier that so far the legal team and Soeharto's family have not
yet discussed the solution. According to Indiarto, the family is focusing their
attention on Soeharto's health.
