Indonesia to face decline in food production by 2050

Bandar Lampung (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will face a serious problem in
agriculture namely a 27.1 percent decline in strategic food production by 2050
as the result of the climate change.

"The result of a study we have conducted shows that climate change is only one
of so many problems confronting the sector of agriculture and food supplies
following the narrowing of rice fields and declining agricultural production,"
Prof Dr Bustanil Arifin, professor of the Agriculture Faculty of the Lampung
University, said here on Tuesday.

He made the statement in a seminar themed "Biotechnigue for Agricultural
Development", the result of a cooperation between the Lampung University and
the Indonesian Agricultural Biotechnique Association.

A number of problems and challenges to be faced in Agriculture and the food
economy in Indonesia, he added, was a change in climate, global economic crisis
and a change in the structure of food crops.

"Not to mention internal factors we are facing agricultural politics without
any commitment, an example of which can be seen from World Bank data on revised
budget of our agricultural infrastructure which is at present at the lowest
rate in Asia," he said.

Indonesia, according to him, needed to respond to a serious proposal on the use
of modern biotechnique as a policy to anticipate or minimize issues on
agriculture in the future.

"Hence, it is time to adopt seriously the result of a survey conducted by the
campus," he said, adding that such serious effort could be seen in some steps
that had been taken.

"The government only needs to take a decision on whether biotechnique serve as
a solution to Indonesian agricultural problem in the future. Otherwise, another
solution should be sought," he said.

The first step to do is by research of new biotechnological findings, meaning
that there is a need to make a direct survey at the level of farmers in order
to know whether the results of transgenic seeds could be used under a natural
conditions in an artificial condition at the research institute," he said.

After that, the government only needed to take another important step, namely
studying psychological preparation of Indonesian farmers on biotechnological
basis, if compared to an old pattern such as organic agriculture.

"Strategy and communication to the farmers is very important starting from the
definition of maximum transgenic components up to guarantee on security of
engineered products` utility or biotechnology in general," he said. (*)
