Neocon writer dies WASHINGTON September 20, 2009 WASHINGTON. Irving Kristol, a former Trotskyite turned anti-communist who shaped US politics and foreign policy as the ''godfather'' of neoconservatism, has died aged 89. The Weekly Standard, edited by his son William, announced his death on Friday. In July 2002, then president George W. Bush awarded Kristol the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the top US civilian honour. In an August 2003 article, he described neoconservatism as a ''persuasion'' and underlined that it had its roots among ''disillusioned liberal intellectuals in the 1970s''. He once said neoconservatives were ''liberals mugged by reality''
