Fidel awarded the Order of the
Zambian Eagle
. Raúl receives it for Fidel from the president of that African nation

Livia Rodríguez Delis

THE Order of the Zambian Eagle in the first category, the highest distinction
awarded by the government of that African nation, has been conferred on the
leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

During the event at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana, which took place
after the official reception ceremony, President Raúl Castro personally
received the award from the leader of that African nation, Rupiah Bwezani
Banda, who began a visit to Cuba this Monday.

In a note read by his secretary, the Zambian president affirmed that Fidel had
inspired many people in the struggle for the independence and dignity of
humanity and, together with Cuba, has distinguished himself as a forerunner and
promoter in the search for freedom without borders.

Despite the severity of the blockade, the Caribbean nation, with the guidance
of the Cuban leader, has become a standard for internationalism by providing
education, healthcare and other benefits to other countries, he highlighted.

His human quality, affirmed Rupiah Bwezani Banda, is well known at
international level and he is described as an incomparable leader.

On behalf of the Cuban government, Homero Acosta, secretary of the Council of
State, expressed thanks for the Zambian award conferred on Fidel who, he said,
receives in recognition of the people for winning and preserving their rights.

In mentioning our maximum leader's personal contribution to African peace,
independence and development, Zambia also pays tribute to the thousands of
internationalists who have fought and worked alongside our African brothers and
sisters, and particularly to those who gave their lives in that struggle,
commented the Cuban official.

OFFICIAL TALKS

Following the protocol reception ceremony, official talks took place between
President Raúl Castro Ruz and Rupiah Bwezani Banda, president of the Republic
of Zambia.

Examining bilateral relations, the leaders agreed - despite their current
positive state - to continue strengthening them in all areas, based on the
principles of cooperation and mutual benefit.

They also discussed topics of an international nature and multilateral issues,
particularly those of direct concern to Africa, Latin America and the Third
World in general.

Also participating in the meeting was Esteban Lazo Hernández, vice president of
the Council of State.
