Snows of Kilimanjaro Will Exist Only in History Books

Since 1912, 85 percent of the ice on top of Africa's highest mountain has
disappeared, according to a new study. If predictions are correct and it all
disappears within 20 years, it will mark the first time in 12,000 years that
the mountain doesn't have any ice. This is primarily due to an increase in
global temperatures, although, as the New York Times emphasizes, there isn't
any consensus on the actual cause of the decline in ice. Interestingly, though,
researchers found that in the past 40 years there has been a process of
extensive melting and refreezing of the ice, something that had never occurred
before. And even those who say other causes, such as moisture levels, could be
responsible for the ice disappearing are quick to point out that Kilimanjaro
can't be seen in isolation, as there have been sharp declines in ice fields
elsewhere in the world. "The fact that so many glaciers throughout the tropics
and subtropics are showing similar responses suggests an underlying common
cause," the study's leader said.
