Bank Mutiara Teller Disappears With Rp 1.3b Cash

Solo. Whatever its name, PT Bank Mutiara - formerly known as Bank Century -
seems to have a habit of losing money.

Solo Police said on Wednesday that a teller from a local branch of Bank Mutiara
disap peared on Friday with Rp 1.3 billion ($140,400) while on assignment in
Jakarta.

Solo Police Chief Sr. Comr. Joko Irwanto said he was cooperating with Jakarta
Police to locate Baruno, who was sent to the capital to deliver confidential
documents.

"He has disappeared, along with the Rp 1.3 billion that he was supposed to
transfer to Bank Mutiara in Solo," Joko said.

He was quick to add, however, that they were not alleging that Baruno ran off
with the cash. Joko said there were a number of possible explanations,
including the teller having been robbed and kidnapped, or even killed.

"There are many other possibilities," he said. "Clearly, this is a sensitive
issue, considering Bank Mutiara is the old Bank Century."

Bank Century rebranded itself and changed its name after it collapsed at the
height of the global financial crisis in late 2008, requiring a controversial
government bailout of Rp 6.7 million.

Joko acknowledged that the case of the missing teller was sensitive because of
the contentious House of Representatives' investigation of the bailout.

"The police will investigate this case professionally and without any
politics," Joko said.

According to Joko, Baruno went missing at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta
International Airport. "No one knows where he went after that. His phone has
been inactive since Friday," he said.

A security staffer at the bank, Istamar, confirmed that Sukarno had gone to
Jakarta.

"I dropped Sri Baruno off at the Adi Soemarmo Airport last Friday, but I know
nothing about this case. What I do know about Baruno is that he is a simple
person who would never have thought about committing a crime," he said.

Baruno's wife, Ina Muntofiah, reported her husband missing to Solo Police.

"The last time he called me was on Friday morning from the airport in Solo,"
she said.

Comr. Susilo Utomo, chief of the Solo Police crimes unit, said he received a
missing person's report from the Bank Mutiara.

The head of the bank in Solo, Sukarno, could not be reached for comment.

However, Ina said Sukarno went to his employee's home to look for him after
discovering he was missing on Friday.

I na said Sukarno forced her to give him her cellphone.

"He said that he couldn't call Baruno from the office, and then took my phone,
thinking he would answer if he thought it was me calling him," Ina said.

Ina has sought legal help to deal with the case and track down her husband.

"I'm afraid for my husband's safety, especially with that much money," she
said. "I know the banks will take a hands-off approach to this."
