Atheists Gather to Celebrate ... Atheism

In what is believed to be the largest gathering of atheists in the world, 2,000
non- (or anti-) believers descended on Melbourne, Australia, to "celebrate
their lack of religious belief." "They plan to issue a statement on what they
say are the negative effects of religion on society," the BBC reported, but
attendees are being urged to avoid what many atheists consider a major problem
with believers: missionary zeal in the promotion of their message. The Global
Atheist Convention as the event is called will feature a talk centered on Islam
and terrorism by renowned atheist and bestselling author Richard Dawkins. "They
will also hear a film proposal, exposing the amount taxpayers spend subsidizing
religion," the BBC reported.
