UN representative in Haiti praises Cuban cooperation workers

UNITED NATIONS, March 9 (PL). - The head of the United Nations
Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Edmond Mulet, today described the
work of Cuban doctors in that earthquake-struck Caribbean country as
"extraordinary."
Those professionals are working in every corner of Haiti, in an
extraordinary way, with dedication and love, and often in difficult, really
terrible conditions, the official told Prensa Latina in an exclusive interview
at the UN headquarters.
Despite that situation, they are there, committed, working hard in a very
admirable way, he added.
Regarding the activities of the Cuban contingent, Mulet noted that it was
a presence and a solidarity that has been manifest for years.
He explained that the MINUSTAH mandate does not include medical issues,
but that the mission maintains cordial relations with the Cuban doctors, who
are self-sufficient and do their job, he added.
When the earthquake struck, approximately 400 Cubans were working in the
health sector in Haiti, a figure that has now risen to close to 1,500,
including Haitian medical graduates who studied medicine in Cuba.
The contingent also contains professionals from 22 nations in Latin
America and the Caribbean and seven from the United States who graduated from
the Latin American School of Medicine.
