Daimler Slapped With $185 Million Fine for Bribing Government Officials

Daimler AG and its subsidiaries pleaded guilty to bribing government officials
in 22 countries, the Justice Department announced. "U.S. District Count Judge
Richard Leon ordered Daimler to pay $93.6 million in criminal fees, and $91.4
million in civil penalties," CNN reported. "The civil fines represent the
restitution of profits made in the illegal deals." The German carmaker paid out
tens of millions in bribes to secure contracts with government customers in
Russia, China, Iraq, Turkey, Vietnam, Greece, Egypt, and 15 other countries.
"According to court documents, Daimler AG and its subsidiaries in Germany,
Russia and China agreed to the filing of a single count of conspiracy to
violate U.S. anti-bribery laws," CNN reported. Some of the bribery money went
through U.S. banks, according to prosecutors.
