Islamist Rebels Advance on Pirate Stronghold in Somalia

Islamist rebels from the al Qaeda-linked militia al-Shabaab, considered a
terrorist organization by the United States, marched toward Harardhere,
Somalia, on Sunday. Al-Shabaab advanced on Harardhere, a pirate stronghold on
the coast, presumably to enact revenge for the capture of a boat filled with
supplies intended for the militia. Al-Shabaab controls much of southern
Somalia, including the capital, Mogadishu, and is working to destroy the
country's United Nations-backed transitional government. The pirates had
stopped paying bribes to the group. CNN's source, an anonymous journalist, said
that the "pirates appeared to be retreating from Harardhere to the port town of
Hobyo, Somalia with their captured ships," but the European Union naval force,
which patrols the waters off of Somalia's coast, had no information. On the
same day, the rebels clashed with government forces in Mogadishu in a fight
that left 10 dead and 40 more wounded.
