May 13, 2010 Renegade Thai general shot while being interviewed 01:08 PM Maj. Gen. Khattiya Sawasdiphol. CAPTIONBy Thanyarat Dokesone, APA renegade Thai general in charge of security around an encampment of protesters was shot and critically wounded today while giving an interview to a group of reporters, Reuters and other media report. Khattiya Sawasdiphol, 58, who has been nicknamed "Commander Red," is considered a terrorist by Thailand's government. New York Times reporter Thomas Fuller, who was interviewing the general at the time, said he was 2 feet away when he heard a loud, firecracker-like bang. "The general fell to the ground with his eyes wide open, and protesters took his apparently lifeless body to the hospital, screaming out his nickname," Fuller writes. Fuller says the general's last words, spoken in Thai, were: "The military cannot get in here." The Times says the general was "abhorred" by the government and by many of the protesters but had nonetheless assumed control of security with paramilitary fighters around the encampment. Protesters have been carrying out rallies calling for the government's resignation for five weeks. (Posted by Doug Stanglin)
