Cuba: better health statistics than developed countries
? Affirms president of International Pediatric Association

José A. de la Osa

INFANT mortality statistics in Cuba, in the first year of life as well as in
the first five years, "are better than those found in developed countries with
much higher national incomes," affirmed Dr. Chok-wan Chan, president of the
International Pediatric Association (IPA), speaking in Havana yesterday at the
International Workshop on Infant Healthcare Practices.

"When I compare health statistics in the United States with those of Cuba, the
latter are superior," for which reason he considers that Cuba is a "good
example" in terms of achieving positive statistics, as a result of the
political will of the revolutionary government, its system of universal and
free healthcare, the educational level of the population as a whole, and the
preventive approach of its professionals.

Closing the workshop, Dr. Elizabeth Mason, director of the Department of Infant
and Adolescent Health of the World Health Organization, addressing delegates
from 10 countries in the region, said that she knew of only one other health
system as good as Cuba's, alluding to the United Kingdom.
