I'd say, the problems from incompatible libc (and incompatible X11) are
relatively seldom.

*.AppImage - build under newer libc
*_older_distros.AppImage - build under older libc

This should be sufficient. An advanced user can figure out references to a
particular version of libc via `nm -D', and rebuild from source what he
prefers.
