If "Mask Selection" is not checked "alpha" will not work.

What I know, "alpha" slider works with both "Filter Active" and "Mask
Selection" checkboxes checked.
The "Filter Active" checkbox enables the options: red, green, blue, hue,
saturation, value, fade, *alpha*.
