I don't know if you have seen this, but here is a project based on a cut of Blender.

I believe the first release is little more than a cut down code fork.  It is still very early days and they are hoping for the release of the next version in February.

Could be worth following up.

Ciao,

Hi all,

and a big thanks to all the developers for the gift of a free
(as in speech) video editor.

I realized a small clip with Cinelerra and I have to say that it
was a wonderful experience 'till now.
But I have to admit that, when tracks number grew above ~5 the
'Program' GUI started to look a bit confusing to me.
So, wandering about, I met another NLE for video: the Sequence
Editor of Blender ( http://www.blender.org ). Althought this is
a 3D drawing program, it has a small and nice interface for
composing tracks (imported videos, rendered 3D animations...),
with a high possibility of customization (drag-n-drop
repositioning of tracks, grouping of tracks in a single
meta-track,...).
This NLE is being currently enhanced thanks to the Orange
Open-Movie project:

Some more infos on the use of the Sequence Editor can be also
found in the Blender manual:
http://download.blender.org/documentation/htmlI/ch25.html
Hope this can be interesting to somebody.

Ciao, Leo
