Today I used ffmpeg to convert the cinelerra output to DVD-friendly
format, which is much more compressed (more than 6:1), and played the
result, and the audio and video were lined up properly.

So the problem was with mplayer, not cinelerra; more specifically, with
my system's ability to handle bandwidth.
