I would be checking the project settings (settings, format) and the
asset (right click) info settings. It took me a while to get
functionality our of Cinelerra, which required getting aspect ratios,
interlacing and everything else right. A known format to work fine, for
your tests, is ogg theora/ vorbis with the default settings.

Thanks very much for the response Graham. To trouble-shoot my problem
of not being able to re-open any project without getting a lockup... I
started cinlerra from a console. The application started fine. Then i
chose File | Load Files and selected my project. The lockup occurred,
and the console had this message:

y4m_read_stream_header() failed: bad stream or frame header
bad YUV4MPEG2 header: parameter out of range

Any ideas what is causing this?

Also, in Settings | Format, I am using the defaults. I don't see
anywhere any options for ogg theora/ vorbis as you suggested. I have
changed my playback settings to use ALSA (with stop playback lockup).
And I have set "Samples to send to console" to 2048. These give smooth
playback as others here have suggested.

Perhaps someone else on this list with more experience can interpet that terminal message - I'm not sure. It's a start.

The ogg-theora suggestion was related to rendering. You select it when you render.

I have had crash problems with ALSA and use the OSS driver instead.

But before you do that - if you haven't made any changes to the settings, and to make a 'clean slate' for reproducing your problems; Delete the directory ~/.bcast.

Now open cinelerra from a terminal and set your sound driver to OSS.

Here are some other ideas: if the existing project material is not critical - continue you experimenting now with a new project. Perhaps a partially or incorrectly rendered track is inserted in this project which is stopping the project from opening properly. Before you attempt to render the new project 'save' the project file. Close and Open Cinelerra (from a terminal) and 'load' the project file back in. If this is successful then try to render to ogg/vorbis. Make sure the Insertion Strategy (at the bottom of the render dailog) is set to : insert nothing.

Graham

Thanks,
Dean
