 Unless the old and the new version can use exactly the same versions of
the dynamic libraries (like libquicktime, libmpeg and so forth) you are
in for quite a lot of hassle.  Setting up a chroot does not take much time
if you are on a fast Internet connection (net install of all the required
packages), and it saves you the grief of conflicting or incompatible
libraries mysteriously getting in the way of each other.
