this solved it for me:
Go to Preferences, Playback. Enable "Stop playback locks up".

I dunno what to do about it, but I have the same problem with that
build and gentoo 2.6.16-p1 (ck-sources) on amd64. That's my biggest
(only?) gripe with gentoo, really. Portage is soooo sloooooooow to
add new packages. I have yet to try making my own ebuilds, but I
think that may be our only option besides waiting for the gentoo gods
to update portage for us ;)
