I am running Cinelerra with great success on a:

AMD Athlon64X2 3200, 2gig ram and 300 gig IDE drive running on Ubuntu
Brezzy 32.

My Cinelerra installation was straight from synaptic.

For a while playback performance was horrible, but then I found out my
motherboard did not really suported AGP, and the NVIDIA videocard was not
perofrming at all. I then switched to a Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI
Express x16 Video card, and now it rocks!.

I get 29fps on straight HD 1080i playback, (3 to 7 when applying effects)

On plain DV Encoding a 7 minute DV (720x480) to mpeg (.mpv) for latter use
on DVD takes about 4.5 minutes, encoding the audio (.mpa) takes about 30
seconds. When encoding CPU utilization goes to 80%+80%, so it is perfectly
usable for any other tasks.

I have also loaded Cinelerra on Ubuntu Brezzy 64, and since I did not
noticed inmediate improvements, I sticked with Brezzy 32, as it was more
convenient for me. (Still got it on my dual boot)

Good luck with your system choice.

alx.

PS. While I am at it, I found that QDVDAuthor does a great job preparing
and burning DVD's that are compatible with all the DVD players I've so
far tried (about 8)
