Are they really?  My impression is that every un-muted track soaks up
quite a lot of CPU power.

you are probably right (and i should think a bit more before posting...)

what I wanted to say: the number of tracks is not so limited, and if you
don't have material on a track at a given point, it almost doesn't hurt.

So often I find it better to use a new track then to try to re-use
tracks for a different purpose later on at the timeline. Most of the time,
I have almost all tracks muted and playing only the tracks I am currently
working on. Besides the mute-button, there is the play-button in; if
disabled, this track won't send any source material to the processing
pipeline, so this is another possibility to "mute" a track without
interfering with the "solo"/"all" toggle feature.
