After much googling I can, hopefully, resolve a little of the mystery involving nvidia opengl2.0 support.
As commented by someone on this list the nvidia Geforce6XXX series do support opengl2.0. All of them. Apparently the ones that have ads and specs saying they support opengl1.5 just have old advertising/specs. With the earlier Geforces 5, 4, 3xxx s you might have some luck with emulation mode. Although that will be slow. For the second mystery: glxinfo advice of the type: opengl version: 1.2 (2.0.x NVIDIA xx.xx) seems to be a sign of a misconfigured system. The client and server glx version strings reporting different version is another symptom of this sort of problem. I think the solution is to reinstall the nvidia drivers. I got myself in a bit of trouble doing this but I have managed to get glxinfo now reporting open gl version 2.0.2 with my Geforce 6200 TC card.
