I'd call
*typing "echo `0x7ffffff` > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax"*
a temporary solution (because it is as long as my work session).

I'd call
*adding the line kernel/shmmax=0x7fffffff to the file /etc/sysctl.conf*
a permanent solution (because it is as long as my Cin revision life).

What I don't get is why the error message and the manuals suggest the
first one while everyone is hunting for the second one, looking for it
on ML and IRC.

If the second (permanent) solution is so dangerous, why do we keep
suggesting it?

Thanks
Raffaella the stubborn :-)
