Cheesy? OK ... I'm imagining clouds, real clouds, appearing near your
characters head. Inside the clouds, the dream sequence appears. Dim and
small at first, it gets brighter as camera zooms in and the dream fills
the screen.

Point your camera at the sky for several hours on a day with some nice
fluffy clouds. Speed up the time by a factor of 10 or so, and then use
key frame to turn the blue to transparent, and mask with a fuzzy border
to insert your dream. Instead of mask, maybe you can use image ops (e.g.
multiply) to make your dream cloud-shaped.
