According to my experience the package names (of which Raffaella writes about) does change (rather too) often. But the content of the packages is much more conservative and doesn't change that much.
For instance, I could make Cinelerra work with Marillat's mjpegtools package as well as with Ubuntu official one, so the content must have been at least similar. What is a bit troublesome is that if the package names change, you may eventually find it difficult to satisfy Synaptic's dependacy requirements. In other words, if Raffaella would compile both programs by herself, then they would most probably work with either mjpegtools package. But if she wants to install them in an easy way (through synaptic), then she may run into troubles. My personal advice to her would be: 1. remove all 3rd party software (such as Marillat's mjpegtools) on which your programs (Cinelerra etc.) depend 2. Try to install it from official Ubuntu repo 3. Try to install (again) all the software (Cinelerra etc.) you want to use 4. If it doesn't go, start compiling. Step no. 4 may be necessary if Muzzol didn't yet make the Cinelerra Ubuntu package wich onle depends on Ubuntu libraries (not on Marillat ones). All the best! Miha P.S. Muzzol, if you still didn't make Cinelerra package which only depends on Ubuntu stuff... if you need some help on this one please let us know.
