Takk for det :-)

Well, at home I still use my old K7 PC with 512 Mb RAM as a multiboot
Linux distro/Win2k "lab machine", which of course won't work other than
simple tests of Cinelerra just as now. As a initial subsriber of
"Linuxmagasinet", I also read with interest your articles about DV
editing and HDV editing with Cinelerra previous last year. To play HDV
you suggested about a 2GHz CPU dependent of architechture and required
to edit HDV with Cinelerra a very fast CPU i.e a 3.4 GHz Zeon.

Well, a few months ago at my office I've provided a Dell Precision 490
workstation with a 'Woodcrest' single Xeon 5160/3.0 GHz CPU and 2 GB RAM
(not unlike a dual CPU PowerMac hardware). From tests I read, the Xeon
5160/3 GHz CPU should be even faster than Xeon 5000/3.73 GHz (Dempsey)
due to faster 1366 MHz FSB (vs 1066) and 4 MB shared L2 Cache. Beside
5160 is running cooler with TDP 85W vs 130W. This is my fast opportinity
Linux workstation I think I will use for the heaviest HDV work later.
I also plan to replace my home PC, when Intels upcoming Santa Rosa
faster laptop platform with better graphics become available later this
year as expected. Beside, I just noticed the recent announced PCI
Express graphic for laptops from Asus. Much of video and multimedia
interests looks therefore to happend on laptops soon.....

Yes, I just renamed the file extension from .m2t to .mpg in Nautilus.
Then the file could be loaded into Cinelerra's Program window, and yes,
found it again in Resources below Media (Miha). There I right clicked on
then thumbnail and selected View from the menu.

What afterwards happened or more correct not happened, was that the
first image slowly arised from green to a clear image in the Viewer. I
pushed the Forward button |> to start the "play" forward function.
However the video didn't start playing, just the first image stayed
continuous visible. I also tried another .mpg file and the same happened
again.

Here is a link to screen shot of the situation:

I wonder therefore if it is impossible to play mpg files in Cinelerra
caused by my old and slow K7 hardware, ATI Rage 128RF and no 3D enabled?
Or can this be caused by some wrong or missing configuration, settings
that should be changed. At first I used the default (custom)
Setting>format, then I tried 1080i and PAL without any change with
regards to start playing the file.
I will add that I haven't been able to configure my Creative SB Audigy
LS sound card on openSUSE 10.2 yet, due to a reported current bug
(worked in 10.1). Therefore the Gnome media players neither won't start
any video.

Yes, of course. I'm thankful to get everything that can help me getting
started. Although I haven't currently provided a HDV camcorder yet, it
is just a question of time before I can evaluate the best (price) offer.
But it is no secret that I'm going towards the new Sony HDR-FX7 handycam
model, which is promised available here within the end of January. FX7
is a descendant of "FX1", which I read you own;)
Mobility and lower weight (1,5kg), 20x optical zoom with optical image
stabilizator Steady shot, low CMOS power requirements and from here max
8 hour largest battery recording time, are among what have been most
important for me. However, its low light 4 lux limit should wishible
have been better like the 3 lux limit for on FX1 or as good as on Canon
A1, which both also have some more professional features.

HDV clips:
In case they might be of interest to test for other on this list, here
are links to jpgs and to download some current HDV m2t/mpg video clips
recorded with the mentioned HDV camcorders:
