transcode has worked for me in the past:
transcode -i MY_VIDEO -c START_FRAME-END_FRAME -y im -F png -o pics/
will make png files for each frame between START_FRAME and END_FRAME
in a new directory called 'pics'
(g)xine and friends can also do screen captures.
