I think that cinelerra will take some time to enter in ubuntu.
I really dunno about creating a perfect debian/ubuntu package, but the 
cinelerra debian maintainer could help.

Anyway, for now, you could write the dependencies you installed in your 
machine to run cinelerra in a README.txt, and then periodically generate the 
package using checkinstall, as you did. 
;)

Remember that you should check if your HD is w/ dma activated (really 
important) and if your graphic card is working w/ opengl enabled (nice to 
have).
