What distro? Newer Linux kernels support a dynamic dev filesystem. Are you trying to play audio or capture video? For video capture, I would expect the /dev nodes to be created when a firewire device is plugged in, if they do not pre-exist. On an older distro, you may need to do the mknod commands manually.
