Hi, is this the rigth way to ask for a feature? there is some missing stuff in cinelerra, wich I think some should take care of. Perhaps someone is already working on this, but please tellme, I´m not a coder, but you can count on my colaboration as a designer/editor/or qherever you need.

first missing feature (not vital): Footage organization.
cinelerra, simply throws every clip on the same resource window,so if you are capturing videos (I use kino for this), you must use the name to know which clips is this or that one, but wouldn´t be great to have bins like premiere? we could organize the footage BEFORE use it on the timeline, after the capture, with bins, everithing is faster (I have to thos all in the timeline and create CLIPS to do something lilke that, but is not the same, because when you thow back the clip from the resources window, ALL THE CLIPS WITH SPACES BETWEEN apears, you cannot choose one video or another).

SECOND missing feature (VITAL): METACLIPS
when you edit a tv show(I do it every week), first you create the tematic blocks then you edit the clips with the host and finally you interleave host-note1-host-note2-adv-host-note3, in premiere or mainactor, you create SEQUENCES, and then you can edit those sequences as a SINGLE AUDIO/VIDEO STRIP... in cinelerra I must create clips, so suppose I have at least 12 layers (the regular stuff, 2 audio, 2 audio for music, 2 more for other audio fx, 2 basic video,2 superimpose,2 titles, etc). thes you create CLIPS, and when you throw that clip, you have 12 layer again.

THIRD missing feature: look and feel
SUV, look much better than blonde and bluedot (try not to remember), but seriously, come on, SUV looks pro because you can´t see much, it´s dark... and flat, greenlerra looks promising, but still, is not difficult to make it look like the REST OF THE DESKTOP (gnome/kde) or even better, but most of us can´t compile cinelerra (I never could, and I try a lot), is really necesary to have compiled themes? Isn´t there another way to load themes? like xmms, or inkscape, come on, I want to contribute, and I have drawn several themes for cinelerra but I can´t use those.

FOURTH missing feature: Aspect Ratio 16:9 and 4:3
HOW IN THE NAME OF THE LORD shoud I suppose to use 4:3 footage in a 16:9 project an viceversa? the "transform" videoFX, works fine, but ALL we know that we´re losing quality here.

FOURTH missing feature(VITAL!): coherent deinterlacing
this may be my mistake... I guess, NONE of ALL the deinterlacing techniques in cinelerra works, why shoul I loose half of my lines? how other softwares do it? and doesn´t take forever, in cinelerra this is terrible.

FOURTH missing feature:(?) mpeg
why render only mpegAUDIO or mpegVIDEO? isn´t there an option to render a mpeg ProgramStream?

thake this as a suggestion only, but I try to explain some REALWORLD problems editting with cinelerra, now you have the last word. Please I want to help here, I love cinelerra, and want to be part of it, but I just can draw themes or edit clips.

Component Y'CbCrA 8-bit 4:4:4:4 in a Quicktime container with twos
complement audio is the only working uncompressed format which correctly
stores alpha information. I found that after exhaustive (exhausting!)
testing 9 months ago so things may have changed. It is a good choice if
you're playing around with alpha effects such as masks, chromakey etc.
The bandwidth on a PAL full screen video is about 41MB sec! I'm not
sure about its performance in terms of compositor playback because I
haven't played with it for a while.

If you don't need alpha info I would start by trying out something like
Component YCbCr 8-bit 4:2:2, again in a Quicktime container.

Straight DV export is working well and is not heavily compressed, with
no alpha. Most people around here seem to put it in a Quicktime
container. This may be a legacy of the long period of time when
straight DV export wasn't working.

You could also try TIFF or PNG sequences for a non compressed format
(although alpha doesn't work properly last time I checked). Bear in
mind that if you don't select a container format (such as Quicktime of
avi) then you produce a folder of images which is not fully portable.
The text list of TIFF or PNG images in the folder uses absolute file
paths. It needs to be recreated if you move your image directory.

If you want to accept some compression for bandwidth reasons then why
not Ogg /Theora...

Hopefully thats helpful. Feel free to feed your own discoveries back
into the list. Best of luck...

Graham E.

Hi Nick,

Welcome! Questions are always welcome here, even if no one has a good
answer right away.

You can also search the mailing list for past answers, in case no one
gets back to one right away.
